Political Visions and Illusions

This book surveys five major ideologies: liberalism, conservatism, nationalism, popular sovereignty and socialism, with a focus on their respective spiritual foundations. The last part explores two plausible alternatives that grow out of two Christian traditions that have affirmed societal pluriformity, viz., the Roman Catholic and Reformed.

This book undertakes to explore the concept of authority by connecting it to office and ultimately to what scripture refers to as the image of God. It begins by analyzing the relationship between power and authority, proceeds to take up freedom and authority, and then theories as to the sources of authority. It concludes with an analysis of the pluriformity of authority, which corresponds to the various communal settings within which we encounter it on a daily basis.
